Therapeutic Trimming and Shoeing

Combining Veterinary and Farrier Expertise

The value of paired expertise is exponential. At KMEH, we are happy to work with your farrier and provide trimming and shoeing recommendations for your horse based on our radiographic findings. We are also happy to provide you and your farrier a copy of your horse’s radiographs at your request. Each horse responds to therapeutic trimming slightly differently and what works for one horse may be different from what works for another horse with a similar disease process or radiographic findings. Therefore, our veterinarians enjoy including you and your farrier in open discussion of how to best accomplish our goals for your horse.

Trimming and Shoeing for Laminitis

After acquiring radiographs of your horse’s feet, we can provide individualized recommendations for trimming and shoeing for laminitis. This includes deciding the best location for breakover in regards to the location of your horse’s coffin bone inside its hoof and placement of the shoe to continue to ease breakover and provide additional support in the necessary locations. Shoeing laminitic horses often includes providing sole protection with a pad and partially filling under this pad to help disperse your horse’s weight while preventing pressure on painful areas.
